California Heights was established in the 1920s. Oil was found on the nearby Signal Hill, this is what triggered California Heights to become developed. The neighborhood was part of the grazing areas of Bixby Ranch. Once the oil was discovered though California Heights was established. The elevation is slightly higher than the downtown part of Long Beach, which is why it was named California Heights. The most popular style home that was built in the neighborhood was the Spanish Style Revival Home. There are still quite a few of these in the neighborhood. The style of California Heights has not changed much over time. Which is why most people choose to live here.
